ROMRunner, Inc. was incorporated in 2001 to provide IT consulting,
primarily EDI and logistics management. Our practice has benefited
from the convergence of a number of technologies.
-
Communications – 2.4 and 5.8 GHz
spread-spectrum eliminated the frequency licensing problems
we experienced in the early 90’s. As more hardware
manufacturers moved into the market, prices came down to
acceptable levels. Today, we can set up a wireless LAN
(local area network) using off-the-shelf routers and access
points.
-
Handheld scanners – The devices have become
smaller and lighter.
-
Barcode scanners – Newer models feature
longer ranges and more variety – from integrated scanners to
tethered long-range scanners
that read anything from one-dimensional barcodes to RFID tags.
-
Keypads – In the early days, route
delivery personnel were not typing experts. They preferred
the alphanumeric keypads whose buttons ranged from A in the
upper-left to Z in the bottom-right. Those are still available,
but the new QWERTY keypads are gaining popularity. Numeric-only
keypads are also available, so there is quite a variety now.
-
Operating system – Pocket PC and on-board
browsers revolutionized the industry. In the early days, each
device had to be programmed in its proprietary language. With
a common operating system, customers can choose among handheld devices
from a number of hardware vendors and still use the same software
applications.
-
Versatility – Until recently, scanners were specialized.
Now, the device that scans inventory can also be a cell phone,
music/video player and camera
Large companies have benefited from this technology for
at least a decade, but now prices have dropped to a level small businesses can
afford. ROMRunner, Inc. has been on the leading edge of this technology
for large companies and now we extend it to small businesses with our first
product introduction - BarcodeTP.
